hello.
welcome to the second edition.
well, it has been an extremely busy time between (issues). i'll keep this brief,
there's a lot to be said but space is limited (sorry to those whose contributions
didn't make it in this issue). at the start of May Nancy Stark Smith,
one of the key developers of Contact Improvisation (CI), made a brief visit
to our shores. while her stay was brief, her impact (upon myself at least) was
grand and timely. this growing community of contacters nationwide is at a fertile
and delicate stage. and as we all follow the rapid pace of our developing community
we need to take the time to acknowledge the history of CI even as we create
our own. in that history there is a strong working practise ethic, seeing the
form as a practise that needs to be constantly explored and ratified kinesthetically.
responsibility is also something i feel needs to be addressed. within a contact
dance we are each responsible for our own bodies. we also have a responsibility
to the communication between our body and others, and our body and the floor
(gravity). to create a feeling/space of safety, support and to be able to nurture
the dance there needs to be a commitment to openness and communication. this
openness allows us to generate and sustain possibility, to allow progression
and development and to provide nutrition and sustenance for our movement. I
would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the first two editions.
Without them there would be no magazine.
is
a tool and a resource for anyone who takes the time to write and read. Please
feel free to respond to any of the articles by sending a letter or writing an
article of your own. If you feel certain issues need to be discussed, jump right
in. I would also like to thank Hanna Hoyne for her beautiful sketches
which grace a number of the pages. And finally a huge thankyou to Stoo.
Without him I would be stuck in front of my computer forever trying to decide
on which font and what image and how much leading and kerning to apply and what
style and should I use parenthesis again and where on earth is the off switch
on this thing...
